Questions and answers

The things people most often ask us. If your question isn't here, send it our way.

Where does Spirit and Soul work?

Our programs begin in Liberia, in underserved communities where access to quality education is limited. Our organization is based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Our vision is to extend the work to communities around the world.

Who do you serve?

Children and youth in underserved communities. Our programs are designed for a range of ages and skill levels, with activities adapted so every child can participate.

Is Spirit and Soul a registered nonprofit?

Yes. Spirit and Soul, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, recognized in 2025. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

How are donations used?

Gifts fund program materials such as books, art supplies, and sports equipment, along with volunteer training and the costs of running sessions in Liberia. Our programs are built around locally available materials so that funds stretch as far as possible.

Is Spirit and Soul a Christian organization?

Yes. Our programs bring Biblical Christian principles together with education, mentorship, creativity, and play. Every session includes prayer, Scripture, and age-appropriate character lessons alongside literacy, art, and movement.

Do children need to be Christian to take part?

No. Our programs are open to every child in the communities we serve. Families should know that faith is woven through everything we do, and we share the love of Jesus openly.

What is the Heart, Mind, Hands, Body rhythm?

It is the simple structure every Literacy Through Arts and Sports session follows. Heart is prayer, Scripture, and character. Mind is reading and vocabulary. Hands is art and hands-on projects. Body is movement, games, and sports. The repetition helps children feel safe and connect what they learn with who they are becoming.

Can I volunteer?

Yes. We are building a community of volunteers in the United States and in Liberia, for roles from program planning and fundraising to leading sessions on the ground. Tell us how you would like to help.

Can my church or school partner with you?

We would love that. Churches and schools can sponsor a program site, host a fundraiser, send a volunteer team, or pray with us. Reach out and we will find the right fit.

Can I donate books or supplies instead of money?

Possibly. New or gently used children's books, art supplies, and sports equipment can be useful, but shipping to Liberia takes planning. Please contact us before sending anything.

How can I stay in touch?
